Buenos Aires Weather, Chaos, and Overheard Gossip from the Streets
so here i am in buenos Aires, and let me tell you-the humidity is doing its best to turn me into a walking puddle. i just checked and it's 20.89°C with 88% humidity right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the streets smell like grilled meat and exhaust, and every corner has someone playing tango on a scratched-up accordion. i heard from a guy selling empanadas that the weather flips on a dime here-sunny one minute, stormy the next. classic buenos Aires.
anyway, i spent the morning wandering through san telmo, where the cobblestones are uneven and the antique shops look like they haven't been dusted since the 1920s. someone told me that the best coffee in the city is at *cafe tortoni, but honestly, i got distracted by a street artist doing chalk portraits of evita perón. he said the humidity makes the chalk stick weird, but he's used to it. i bought a small one for 500 pesos-worth it for the story alone.
later, i took a detour to la boca because i heard the buildings there are painted like a toddler's imagination. it's true. every wall is a different neon, and the tango dancers in the plazas are somehow both touristy and magnetic. a local warned me not to wander too far off the main strip-"bad vibes after dark," she said, tapping her temple. i believed her.
if you get bored, montevideo and santiago are just a short flight away, but honestly, buenos Aires has enough chaos to keep you occupied for weeks. the food alone-oh man. i had choripán from a cart near the obelisk, and it was messy, spicy, and exactly what i needed. someone else told me that don julio is the steakhouse to beat, but i haven't made it there yet. saving it for a night when i'm feeling fancy.
and yeah, the weather. it's that sticky kind of warm that makes you want to drink yerba mate all day. i tried it for the first time from a guy in plaza de mayo-he handed me his gourd without asking, and i panicked but drank it anyway. bitter, earthy, and somehow communal. i like it.
anyway, here's a map so you don't get as lost as i did:
and a few photos i snapped-because sometimes you just need to see the chaos for yourself:
if you're planning a trip, just know this: buenos Aires doesn't hold your hand. it throws you into the mix and expects you to keep up. and honestly? i kind of love it.
