cinderella mornings in jennin (and why my boots cooked on pavement)
alright let me start by saying i woke up at 3 am to a temperature that felt like it was trying to rob me of my soul. 12.98 degrees celsius and the kind of cold that sneaks up on you while you’re half-asleep. jaslene had promised it’d be better but honestly i was half-convinced she was still in her sleep talking. checked the apps again and yep 13 celsius is not exactly ‘warm’ but it’s doable if you dress like you’re traveling to antarctica which i wasn’t because we’re not that cheap.
the weather here is this weird mix of ‘i’m alive but barely’ and ‘i’m counting down the minutes until this stupidity stops.’ humidity at 30% doesn’t help. i walked past a tree and it looked like it was holding its breath. maybe that’s just me anthropomorphizing plants but y’know whatever. i’m a botanist in training so i’m basically living my dream. or at least my current weird life decision.
neighbors? if you get bored jersusalem is a short drive away. someone told me that at a hostel and they were probably just trying to sound friendly but it came out like they were plugging a tourism scam. not entirely sure if i believe it but hey at least i have a cab to potentially run on empty to a city that exists.
reviews? i heard this place has the best baklava in the region according to a guy who looked like he’d survived a sandstorm. i didn’t verify it because 1) i’m skeptical of people who talk about food like it’s a religion and 2) i’d rather trust my taste buds. though we ordered from a place that looked like it belonged in a horror movie about abandoned cafes. the baklava was… decent. also, i saw a poster for a dog show in a store window. dogs here are treated like royalty which i guess is good? or at least it explains why there are so many abandoned yarn balls in public spaces.
another thing that happened is i put my boots on a steam grate in the morning and they cooked inside like i was baking them. they smelled like overdone toast for days. classic jennin infrastructure. (-.
i’m not sure why i’m telling you this. maybe because the stars tonight looked like they were made of leftover unicycle parts. or maybe because i just checked and it’s 12.98 again and i’m repulsed. if you’re reading this and you claim to like cold weather then please come stay with me. we’ll hate each other but at least we’ll be equally miserable.
if you want to see what this place looks like don’t trust your eyes. check out the jennin travel board on yelp for actual photos or go to tripadvisor and pray their ‘best cafes’ list hasn’t been sabotaged by a rival barista. also there’s this local blog called ‘oops i messed the internet’ that’s been fun but honestly i just use it to read the weather forecast without looking like a weatherman.
so yeah. 13 degrees. boots cooked. neighbors annoying. vibes absurd. stay safe out there i guess.
