Daegu’s Thrifted Treasures & Steamy Mornings: A Vintage Explorer’s Diary

the first thing you notice here is how the air clings to your skin like a lazy cat in summer. i just checked and it’s 11 degrees celsius, exactly the kind of chill that makes you want to sip bitter coffee and poke around dusty corners. if you wander down Hotteok street food alley-yep, that’s the one with the burning sugar glaze-you’ll catch the scent of sesame more than the people. the locals swear by it, but someone warned me about the aunties who sell black market electro-criminals shirts. just saying.

the map shows where i’m standing, but you’ll need your eyes to spot the real gems. tried the big shops-Museum Catholics? 👆-but they’re mostly for tourists who think ‘vintage’ means a 90s Levi’s jacket. the magic’s in places like the backstreets of Biseulsang-gil, where a cracked mirror shop sells nonsense and a woman in a neon poncho hums old trot songs. I’ve heard rumors about a hidden spot called “Silver Ghost”-something about a ghost in a dress haunting the hangers. creepy or cool?

i’m wearing my grandma’s scarf, faded pink and full of moth holes, and it’s weird how that fits here. told my Instastyle influencer friend this city is ‘authentic’ and she laughed-said she’s never seen someone style a ‘thrifted’ tie-dye shirt like a runway piece. maybe she’s right. tried the cafes-Cafe Onil for their dalgona, but the barista’s kid screamed when I dropped a plate of jeon. kids here hate breakfast, apparently.

neighbors say if you get bored, Gyeongju’s 10-minute drive and Busan’s beef stew will melt your soul. tried the stew and nodded. my dog ’Biscuit’ (real name: Gomi) ate my camera lens cap, but he’s a good boy.

walked past a mural of a phoenix crying glitter. local artist said it’s a metaphor for Daegu’s downtown-‘burned down, rebuilt, still shiny’. i don’t get it, but it’s prettier than the Starbucks they’re turning it into. anyway, if you’re here: drink the soju at Baekryeong bookstore, ask about the hidden jazz bar in the train station basement, and don’t trust anyone who says ‘this city’s quiet.

ending this at a tea house where the owner said ‘you look like you’ve seen ghosts’. told her I felt followed by a 1920s flapper in a moth-eaten dress. she nodded, added ‘keep poking’ and charged me extra for the matcha. ah, nostalgia.
