Düsseldorf Diaries: A Slightly Drunk, Very Cold, and Totally Unplanned Adventure

düsseldorf in january is not for the faint of heart. or the poorly dressed. i landed here thinking i'd just pop in for a quick coffee and maybe a pretzel, but somehow i'm now sitting in a dimly lit kneipe with a beer in one hand and a questionable wurst in the other. the numbers 2934246 and 1276615258? no clue what they mean, but they're probably the coordinates to the nearest currywurst stand or something. anyway, let's talk about this city.

the weather is...something

just checked and it's *5.08°c out there right now, but feels like 1.47°c because the humidity is at a whopping 95%. basically, it's the kind of cold that sneaks into your bones and refuses to leave. if you're into that sort of thing, you'll love it here. if not, maybe stick to the altstadt where the glühwein is hot and the people are warmer.

what i've been up to

i started my day at
café grosz, a tiny spot that serves the best apfelstrudel i've ever had. someone told me that the owner once baked for the king of belgium, but i'm pretty sure that's just drunk advice. still, the strudel was chef's kiss. after that, i wandered over to the rhine promenade because, well, it's there and it's pretty. the river was grey, the sky was grey, and i was grey from the cold, but somehow it all worked.

overheard rumors

here's the thing about düsseldorf: everyone has an opinion. i overheard a guy at the bar saying that the
königsallee is overrated and that the real gems are in flingern. another person swore that the schlossturm is haunted by a ghost who steals hats. i didn't fact-check any of this, but it made for great conversation.

if you get bored

cologne and essen are just a short drive away. someone mentioned that cologne's cathedral is worth the trip, but honestly, i'm still recovering from the currywurst coma. maybe next time.

the map (because why not)

some photos because i'm basic

final thoughts

düsseldorf is weird, wonderful, and way colder than i expected. if you're into beer, wurst, and wandering around in the cold while pretending to be a local, you'll fit right in. just don't forget your hat. or your ghost repellent.
