Dust Devils and Delirium: My Whirlwind in鄯善 (Shanshan)
okay, so鄯善. where do i even begin? honestly, i'm still processing. i saw these numbers - 4005492 and 1484002410 - and my brain immediately went to… something. a code? a phone number? a really long grocery list? who knows. but it felt… significant. and the weather? bizarre. temp 26.19, feels like 26.19. a little humid, but hey, that's the desert, right? Pressure 1018, humidity 22 - feels like a sauna, honestly. Honestly, it's weirdly intense. I just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I landed in 鄯善 on Tuesday, chasing a rumor about some ancient ruins. I’m a bit of a history nerd, so naturally, that’s my jam. I’m trying to be budget-conscious as a student, so hostels are my best friend. I found a decent spot on Hostelworld - it wasn’t glamorous, but it had a good vibe. The area around the hostel was… interesting. The buildings are low, earthy-toned, and close together. It's not the bustling metropolis you might expect. More like a sleepy village that’s seen a few centuries pass.
The historical sites were pretty incredible. I wandered through the ruins of an old fortress - some seriously weathered walls and crumbling towers. Someone told me that the local legend says these walls once protected a hidden oasis. I’m not sure about the oasis part, but the views from the top were breathtaking. Seriously, the vastness of the desert just swallows you up. I took tons of photos, of course. I’m also trying to get better at using my phone camera - still learning the ropes. check out this guide on photography basics Photography Life.
I spent an afternoon getting lost in the local market. The smells! Oh, the smells. Spices, dried fruits, something vaguely resembling incense… it was an assault on the senses in the best way possible. I bought some dates (obviously) and a ridiculously ornate tea set. I’m pretty sure it’s worth more than my entire trip budget, but hey, you only live once.
*Local Tip:* Don't be afraid to haggle. It's part of the culture, and the vendors expect it. I heard from a local board at the hotel that a polite, friendly negotiation usually gets you a decent price. Don't start too low though! It's considered rude. Also, be prepared to drink a LOT of tea. Seriously, they offer it everywhere. If you get bored, 鄯善 is just a short drive away. you can find some cool experiences on TripAdvisor TripAdvisor鄯善.
I’ve been hearing some weird whispers around the cafes. Someone told me that a sandstorm is brewing, and it’s going to be a big one. Another person swore that the ruins are haunted by the spirits of ancient warriors. I’m not sure what to believe, but it adds to the mystique, right? I’m a professional chef, so the food has been fascinating - lots of hearty stews and flatbread. Nothing fancy, but it's filling and flavorful. I'll check out Yelp for some recommendations if i want something different Yelp鄯善.
I’m heading out tomorrow to explore some more remote areas. Maybe I'll even stumble upon that hidden oasis… or at least a really cool rock formation. The sunsets here are unreal. Seriously, picture a sky on fire. It’s worth the trip just for those.
Anyway, gotta go. The sun’s starting to set and I'm feeling a bit… delirious. I'll try to post another update soon. Maybe. Who knows what adventures await. Oh, and if you’re looking for a good place to get some local crafts, check out this blog post Wanderlust.com 鄯善 guide.
