enschede: where the damp air whispers secrets
so i just got back from enschede, and man, what a trip. the weather there is something else - i just checked and it's currently hovering around 9.87 degrees with a humidity of 93%, so if you're into feeling like a damp dishcloth, you'll love it. but hey, the damp air is supposed to be great for ghost hunting, right? spirits love a good chill.
enschede is a small city in the netherlands, but it's got a surprisingly spooky side. if you run out of ghosts to hunt, almere and Zwolle are just a short drive away. but honestly, you won't need to leave because enschede has enough spirits to keep you busy.
when i was there, i heard some rumors. someone told me that the old textile mill downtown is the most haunted spot, but also that the city council has been trying to cover up some paranormal activity there. and then i overheard a local saying that the university's old physics lab is haunted by a ghost who loves to mess with the equipment.
“I heard that the basement of the University of Twente is crawling with spirits of former students who failed their exams. Beware the clicking sounds in the library.”
i spent a lot of time at the university. one night, i set up my equipment in the library. around 3 am, i heard these clicking sounds, just like the ghost hunter said. it was probably just the pipes, but i packed up anyway.
“A local bartender told me that the ghost of a drowned washerwoman haunts the canal near the city park. She’s said to drag people into the water if they get too close.”
i didn't test that one, but i did walk by the canal. it was foggy and the water looked murky. i didn't see anything, but i did feel a cold spot.
enschede has some cool spots for ghost hunting. you should check out the tripadvisor page for more ideas. also, if you want to know where the best bars are, yelp has some reviews. and for serious ghost hunting, i found a local group that meets up on fridays.
the city is also home to some historic buildings. the old town hall is worth a visit, even if you're not into ghosts. it's a beautiful building.
i also visited the textile mill which is now a museum. it's huge and has a lot of history. i got a creepy feeling in the basement, but that could have been the cold and the damp.
i also tried to visit the old prison downtown, but it was closed for renovation. i heard that it's one of the most haunted places in the city. maybe next time.
if you're into ghost hunting, i recommend bringing a good camera and some warm clothes. the weather is not forgiving. also, don't go alone. these places can be dangerous.
enschede is not the first place you think of when you think of the netherlands, but it's got its own charm. and its own ghosts. i'll definitely be back.
until next time, keep an eye out for things that go bump in the night.
