Enugu, Nigeria: Where the Heat Meets the Hills (and My Camera)
Enugu... okay, where do I even start? It's this city sitting at the foot of hills, not on a hilltop like the name suggests. Feels like the whole place is holding its breath under this... heat. I just checked and it's... there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 32.75°C, feels like 36.35°C. Yeah, it's a sauna. But hey, the humidity's only 52%? That's... something. Makes the air feel thick, like you're breathing soup. The Harmattan's supposed to kick in soon, bringing dust. Great for photos if you like moody skies, but maybe not for your lungs. Someone told me the air quality's been 'Unhealthy for sensitive groups' lately. Not great for a photographer chasing light, but hey, you adapt. Or you just squint a lot.
Anyway, the city itself? It's got this weird charm. You know how some places just feel... settled? Like the soil's good here, year-round. The Udi Plateau gives it this distinct shape against the sky. I was trying to get a shot of the skyline yesterday, but the light was terrible. Too flat, too dusty. Maybe next time. The neighbors are close: Onitsha is just an hour away, Aba two hours. If you get bored, they're just a short drive away. Someone told me Onitsha's market is insane, like a sensory overload. Aba's got that industrial vibe. Could be interesting for a different kind of photo essay.
Finding good spots is key. I heard someone mention checking reviews on TripAdvisor for hidden gems. Maybe for food? The search results didn't list famous dishes, but I'm sure there's something. Someone told me about a place called "Enugu Special." Sounds promising. Or maybe just cheap coffee. A photographer needs fuel.
Here's the thing: Enugu feels like a city waiting to be discovered, but it's not exactly shouting it from the rooftops. The lack of obvious tourist spots is both a challenge and an opportunity. You have to dig a little. Or maybe just wander. The climate's consistent, but the light... well, it's moody. Sometimes that's the best kind of light for a photo. Other times, it's just frustrating.

So yeah. Enugu. Hot, dusty, hilly, and full of potential. Just don't forget the sunscreen and a good lens. Or maybe just a fan. And maybe some water. Lots of water.
