now, about the parks. there’s not exactly a “pet-friendly park” with fenced-in dog runs and free poop bags. but the locals? they’re surprisingly chill about dogs. i’ve seen people walking their pets along the corniche road, and nobody bats an eye. it’s more of a “park wherever you can” vibe. just keep your dog on a leash and watch out for the occasional goat wandering into your shot.
vet services are… well, let’s call it “rustic.” i took biscuit to a small clinic near the port, and the vet was this older guy who smelled like coffee and had hands that looked like they’d delivered a thousand goats. he patched up a tiny cut on biscuit’s paw for like $5. no frills, but it worked. if you need something more high-tech, you’re better off driving to garowe or even flying to mogadishu.
rent here is surprisingly cheap-i’m paying $200 a month for a two-bedroom near the beach. safety-wise, it’s a mixed bag. the city’s got a rep for being a bit rough around the edges, but i’ve never felt unsafe walking biscuit at dusk. just stick to the busier areas and don’t flash your gear around.
overheard a local at a tea stall say, “you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat their dog.” and honestly? that stuck with me. people here might not have fancy pet stores, but they care.
if you’re bringing a pet to boosaaso, pack your own food, treats, and flea meds. don’t expect a pet spa, but do expect a warm welcome from the community. and if you’re ever in doubt, just ask a local-they’ll point you in the right direction, even if it’s just to the nearest goat herder who doubles as a vet.
