jeju island vibes: a digital nomad’s messy guide to chaos
so... i landed at jeju airport with nothing but a backpack and a list of random things i didn’t need. 1832828 was the flight number, 1410795549 the time i realized i’d forgotten my charger. maybe that’s a metaphor for the island itself. i checked the weather app and it says 12 degrees, which is basically a fridge. you’re welcome. the feels like was 9.85, which is like if your soul was stuck in a freezer. i didn’t care. i was here to escape, not to calculate humidity. 24% humidity? more like 24% existential dread.
right off the bat, i made a mistake. i followed a touristic map that promised "hidden beaches" but led me to a cliff where someone was taking selfies with a drone. i yelled at the sky. it didn’t respond. then i found this tiny cafe called jeju bean via a yelp link i saw on a flickering screen at a convenience store. the barista told me the coffee was made from beans grown in a volcanic soil. i didn’t believe him. i still don’t. but i drank it anyway. here’s a link to their review on yelp: https://www.yelp.com/biz/jeju-bean-jeju-island
neighbors? well, if you get bored, seogwipo is just a 20-minute drive away. it’s not about being close, it’s about the contrast. jeju is this quiet, misty place where you hear wind in the pine trees. seogwipo is loud, with motorbikes and people selling t-shirts that say "i survived jeju." either way, you’re not alone. i heard that from a drunk guy at a hostel who swore the island’s spirit was trapped in a teahouse. i didn’t ask for details.
the weather here is weird. i just checked and it’s...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it’s like the sky is holding its breath. pressure was 1017, which sounds scientific but i think it’s just the island’s way of saying "don’t overthink it." the thermometer said 11.97, which is cold enough to make me question my life choices. i mean, i’m a digital nomad. i should be chasing sunsets, not shivering in a park. but the park had these weird pink flowers. i took a photo. here it is:
i also met a guy who claimed he was a history nerd. he told me about a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast. i didn’t believe him. i did i looked it up on tripadvisor and found this link: https://www.tripadvisor.com/attraction_123456789_jeju-island/. turns out, it’s real. or maybe he was just trying to impress me. either way, it’s a story.
there’s this place called jeju black pork that everyone talks about. i took a gamble and ordered it. the server brought a plate that smelled like regret. i ate it anyway. it was okay. i would’ve preferred a tuna sandwich, but that’s another story. some people say the pork is a local secret. others say it’s just overpriced. i heard that from a woman who asked me for directions while holding a bag of skewers. i told her to follow the smell. she did. we both ended up at a food stall.
the neighbors here are... odd. i heard that someone left a skateboard in the middle of the hiking trail. another person told me the ocean waves are louder at night. i didn’t ask for proof. i just believed them. maybe it’s the island’s way of saying "stay weird." i also saw a guy painting a mural on a wall. he was a street artist. i asked him about his work. he said it was about "the pain of unplugging." i didn’t get it. i just took a photo. here it is:
i don’t know if jeju is for everyone. some people say it’s too quiet. others say it’s too mystical. i said it’s both. i also checked a local forum and found this blog post about jeju’s best coffee shops: https://example.com/jeju-coffee. i haven’t read it. i don’t have time. but i did see a comment that mentioned a rooftop bar with a view of the sunset. i’m going there tomorrow. probably.
the map of jeju is small, but it’s filled with secrets. here’s how to find it:
the coordinates are 35.3333,129.0333. i don’t know what they mean. i just know that when i typed them into google, it showed me a place that looked like a dream. or maybe a trap. i’m not sure.
i also found this unsplash photo of a traditional jeju house. it looked ancient. i don’t know if it’s real or if someone just made it up. here it is:
i didn’t check the alt text. i probably shouldn’t have.
in the end, jeju is whatever you make of it. i came here to work, but i left with stories. i heard that the island’s spirit is in the tea. i drank tea. i didn’t feel it. i think i need more coffee. or maybe less. anyway, here’s a link to a pro-dancer’s take on jeju: https://example.com/jeju-dance. it’s probably not helpful. but it’s there. i added it.
