Karnal Chronicles: Drum Beats, Dry Heat & Drunken Tips

the moment i rolled into karnal with my beat-up van and half-tuned snare, the air hit me like a sauna with attitude. temp: 28.11°c, feels like: 26.87°c, humidity: 22%. basically, if you’re not sweating through your vintage tee by noon, you’re doing it wrong. i just checked and it's dry and dusty there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

anyway, i was here for a last-minute gig at some hole-in-the-wall called "the rusty cymbal" - turns out it’s more of a glorified garage with fairy lights and a surprisingly decent pa system. the locals? half of them looked like they’d wandered in off the street, the other half looked like they owned the street. overheard one guy muttering, "don’t order the butter chicken unless you want to spend tomorrow in the bathroom." classic drunk advice, right?

i set up my kit in the corner, dodging a suspiciously sticky patch on the floor. the pressure was 1009 hpa, which sounds like nonsense but apparently means the weather’s stable enough for a two-hour set without lightning strikes. small wins.

between songs, i chatted with a self-proclaimed "vintage clothes picker" who swore karnal’s thrift scene was "underrated but deadly." she pointed me toward a cramped shop near the old bus stand - said it smelled like mothballs and regret, but had the best band tees in the region. i’ll take her word for it.

if you get bored, ambala and panipat are just a short drive away, though honestly, after a night here, you might not want to leave the sticky-floored magic of karnal.

for food, locals kept raving about *pandit parantha palace - apparently their aloo paratha could cure heartbreak. i didn’t test that theory, but the chai at karnal coffee house* was strong enough to keep me drumming past midnight.

someone told me that the real secret of karnal is the old fort ruins at sunset - said it’s haunted by a drummer who never got his big break. i’ll let you know if i see him next time i’m in town.

check out tripadvisor for more local tips, or just wander until you find a sticky floor and a beat you can’t resist.
