katowice thrift haul: damp alleys, spodek, and a receipt from 1616798495

okay, so i'm in katowice and i'm running on like three hours of sleep because i chased a lead on a 1970s polish workwear collection that turned out to be a bust, but whatever. this city is a *textile dream if you know where to look. the air smells like coal and rain-i just checked and it's 6.77°c with a feels-like of 4.34, humidity 94%, pressure 992 hpa. basically, my wool coat is my best friend and my leather jackets are sweating. but hey, that's the vibe.

i've been wandering around the
centrum and the nikiszowiec district, which is this insane red-brick mining colony that looks like a gothic set. i hit the sunday market at dawn. the stalls were set up under flickering neon, and the air was thick with the smell of fried dough and old wool. i scored a 1960s nurse's dress for 30 zł, and the lady who sold it whispered that it was from a hospital that closed in the 90s. i love that shit.

i heard from a local that the
sunday market there is where the old ladies sell their dead husbands' uniforms-and i'm not here to judge, i'm here for the fabric. i found a jacket with a tag that just says '3096472' and a receipt in the pocket dated 1616798495. that timestamp? march 26, 2021. someone was clearly hoarding goodies during lockdown. score.

if you get bored, kraków is just a short train ride away, and the czech republic is basically next door-you can hop over to ostrava for a cheap beer and more
thrift stores. but stay in katowice, because the spodek arena area hides some epic vintage spots. i stumbled into a basement shop under the stadium that had 80s track suits for like 20 złoty. i'm not even kidding.

look at that map. see that blob? that's where i'm at. the
silesian region is bigger than you think, and the railway yards are a goldmine for workwear. i heard a rumor that the warehouse on ulica 30.96472 (yeah, that's a real street number, don't ask) has boxes of unworn 70s denim jackets. i haven't found it yet, but i will. i'm also scouring the Silesian Thrifters board for leads. Check the thread. the pressure is low, the humidity is high, but my determination is higher.

someone told me that the best
coffee in town is at a place called 'kawa z报' (i butchered the name, sorry) near the university. i tried it-it's strong, bitter, and exactly what i need to stay awake for the next haul. also, yelp says it's open 24 hours, which is a lie, but i'm not mad. Check it out on Yelp.

i'm going to be honest: the
weather here is a nightmare for delicate silks, but perfect for wool and leather. if you're coming, pack layers. also, the people are surprisingly chill once you get past the grim exterior. i've had more conversations with strangers here than in warsaw.

i met this guy at a bar near the
railway station-turns out he's a retired textile engineer. he told me that in the 80s, katowice was pumping out uniforms for the entire eastern bloc. that explains why i keep finding these gorgeous wool blazers with hidden pockets. he also warned me about the basement on 30.96472-apparently it's owned by a guy who hoards stuff from the gdr. that's the lead i'm chasing.

i need to show you some photos. first, this aerial shot of the city at dusk-you can see the
spodek dome in the distance.

then, this is the stadium on a rare sunny day.

and this road? that's the route to the czech border, where the thrift stores are even cheaper.

i've been reading some tripadvisor forums, and apparently the
market on piłsudskiego street is a hit-or-miss. but someone told me that the seller with the red hat knows the real value of vintage. i paid 50 zł for a 1960s dress that's probably worth triple. See what others say on TripAdvisor.

as i sit in this
cafe waiting for my laundry to dry (yes, i'm washing my finds in the sink), i realize that katowice isn't just an industrial wasteland-it's a living museum of fabric and function. every stitch tells a story of workers, protesters, dreamers. and i'm just a sleep-deprived fool trying to carry a piece of it home.

overall, katowice is a raw, industrial
beast with a soft underbelly of vintage treasures. if you can handle the damp and the grim aesthetics, you'll leave with a suitcase full of history. just don't forget your scarf*.

p.s. i'm still hunting for that warehouse. if you find it, hit me up. the number 3096472 might be a clue? and that timestamp 1616798495? maybe it's the code to the lock. i'm not kidding.

now i need to sleep. maybe.
