kc student jobs that don't suck (maybe)

look, kc ain't nyc or austin. it's cheaper, stickier, and the job hunt for a student feels like trying to find a clean table at a crowded chipotle. but listen-there are gigs here that don't require you to sell a kidney or inherit a trust fund. i've been scraping by in this town for two years, so here's the messy, unfiltered deal.

first, the map so you know what the hell i'm talking about:

see that blur? that's the whole damn metro. you'll be taking buses or borrowing a friend's junker that smells like old fries. rent is the big vampire. a studio in brookside or westport? maybe 900 if you're lucky and don't mind a radiator that sounds like a dying walrus. but a room in a house in hyde park or zona rosa? 400-600, and you'll share a bathroom with someone who never replaces the toilet paper. *data from my own ugly spreadsheet: average 1-bed is 1,100, but split three ways? 450 each. still a killer when you're making 12 bucks an hour.

safety? look, it's not a warzone, but you know the deal. don't wander east of troost after dark alone, especially around the paseo. some parts of independence ave get sketchy after 10pm. just be aware, stick to well-lit streets after class. the real danger is the humidity in summer-thick as syrup, makes your hair look like a startled hedgehog.

so, jobs. the classics:
-
coffee shops: starbucks in the plaza, mess hall in westport, any of the 50 micro-roasteries popping up. they pay 13-15, you get free beans (which is basically currency), and the vibe can be chill if you get the right manager. drunk advice from my barista ex: "avoid the place on main with the line out the door at 7am. they treat staff like espresso machine parts."
-
university gigs: student assistant in whatever department that needs filing. i worked in the philosophy dept-mostly i read kant while pretending to scan documents. pay's usually 14-16, hours are flexible, and you're on campus so no commute.
-
research assistant: if you're in science or social sciences, this is the golden ticket. 15-18 an hour, sometimes with course credit. beg your professors, stalk the student job board.
-
event staffing: kc hosts a million conventions at the convention center, concerts at the midland or kauffman center. you'll load chairs, sell t-shirts, usher inconsolable drunks. 15-20 for the day, but it's random and sometimes you're standing for 10 hours.
-
food service beyond coffee: disgruntled cook at pizza 51 (they have a cult following, tips can be good), expeditor at joe's kc (famous for z-man sandwich, but the lunch rush is hell).

overheard gossip at the Brookside bar last week: "someone told me the new library downtown pays 17 for student shelvers, but the hiring manager is a former nun who will judge your soul based on how well you alphabetize." take that with a grain of salt.

the gig economy is alive here too. instacart in the suburbs (slow money, but sometimes you get a 20 tip from a nice old lady in leawood), Rover for dog walking (rich people in mission hills will pay 30 for a 20-minute walk).

cost of living quick reality check-no fancy table, just bullets:
- rent (room): 400-700
- utilities (shared): 50-100
- bus pass: 50/unlimited
- groceries (ramen-heavy): 150-200
- that stupid coffee habit: 40

neighbors: Lawrence is an hour west-weird college town with great thrift stores and band shows. St. Louis is 4 hours east-if you need a big-city fix. both are a drive, but you can hear about them on kc's own reddit, which is a cesspool of civic pride and misplaced anger. here's a thread that actually has job leads: /r/kansascity student jobs. and for the love of god, check yelp's best coffee shops if you're applying-find places that locals actually like, not just the franchise hellholes.

weather: right now it's that gross kc transitional muck-one day 80 and sunny, next day 50 and rainy, then back to 90 with 80% humidity. your wardrobe is either shorts or hoodie, no in-between. it'll break your spirit by november when the wind cuts through your jacket like a knife.

my pick for the best hidden gig?
testing subject* for umkc's psych or bio departments. i once got 50 bucks to sit in a room and press buttons while they flashed lights. lasted two hours, i played candy crush on my phone the whole time. pure profit.

another rumor: the nelson-atkins museum has student docent positions. 15 an hour, you get to talk about art (pretend you know what you're saying) and wander the halls for free. but the interview is brutal-they ask about your favorite pigment.

so there it is. it's not glamorous. you'll have days where you're running between a 7am shift at panera and a 4pm lab, eating a granola bar in the library stairwell. but you'll scrape by. and sometimes, when the sun hits the plaza lights just right and you're walking home with 60 bucks in your pocket from a double shift, kc feels like it might just be yours.

New York City

(that's not kc, but it's what my brain thinks a city looks like. we have fewer cabs and more potholes.)

a large building with a pool in front of it with Union Station in the background

(union station, though. that's real. they redid it, now it's all shiny and has a fish tank. weird flex, but ok.)

final warning: whatever you do, avoid the "promoter" gigs handing out flyters on the plaza. they'll say it's 20 an hour, it's always 5, and you'll get harassed by tourists and pigeons. trust me.

you'll figure it out. we all do.
