Kyoto Chaos: 1862627 & 1392003149 - A Whirlwind

okay, so where do i even begin? kyoto. just…kyoto. the numbers 1862627 and 1392003149 popped into my head seemingly at random - maybe some kind of cosmic code? who knows. i’m a freelance photographer, perpetually chasing golden hour and good vibes (and sometimes just a decent coffee). and this trip? it was a trip.

the weather here is…odd. i just checked and it’s…a damp chill, clinging to everything. not freezing, but definitely makes you want to burrow under a blanket. the pressure is 1025, humidity is 51% - feels like a gentle hug, actually. *grnd_level at 1017, sea_level at 1025…geology isn’t really my forte, but it felt…stable.

my little Airbnb was tucked away in a neighborhood that was a delightful mix of ancient wooden houses and surprisingly modern cafes. the neighbors? they're quiet, respectful. and seriously skilled at making matcha. if you get bored, Osaka is just a short train ride away - tons of street food, apparently. i did hear a rumor from a local shopkeeper that the best ramen spot is down a tiny alleyway, but be warned - it’s
intensely popular.

Himeji Castle, Japan

gear-ish things i crammed in my bag:

camera (obviously - a trusty sony alpha)
extra batteries (essential, people!)
wide-angle lens (for all the temples)
a ridiculously oversized scarf (it’s surprisingly useful)
a notebook and pen (for scribbling down thoughts and directions - i’m terrible with maps)

and, um, a book on the history of samurai. because why not?

reviews i “overheard” (take these with a grain of salt):

“someone told me that the Fushimi Inari Shrine is beautiful, but you’ll walk a lot. like, a lot.”

and another thing: *street food* is king here. seriously. i devoured takoyaki (octopus balls) like it was my job. someone else swore by the okonomiyaki (savory pancake), saying it’s a local staple. i’m planning a food tour with a group from TripAdvisor next week - fingers crossed it’s good.

also, i’m pretty sure i overheard a couple in a cafe complaining that the crowds at Kiyomizu-dera Temple are insane - go early, apparently. or late. or maybe just accept your fate and embrace the chaos. i’m leaning towards the chaos approach.

this place is just…full of history. walking through the ancient temples and gardens feels like stepping back in time. i’m thinking of heading to Nijo Castle tomorrow - judging by the recommendations on Yelp, it’s a must-see.

stay tuned for more chaotic adventures! and if anyone has any recommendations for hidden gems, drop them in the comments! i'm always up for a new coffee shop or a quirky little shop. i'm also trying to find a good place for a traditional tea ceremony - any suggestions?

Japan-Guide has some great info, too. it's a lifesaver sometimes.

hope you're having a decent week, wherever you are!
