Langley, BC: Rainy Days, Hidden Gems, and the Weirdest Coffee I've Ever Had
langley, bc-yeah, that place you pass on the way to somewhere else. but lemme tell you, it's got secrets. like, real ones. i rolled in on a day where the sky looked like it'd been crying for a week straight. temp was hovering around 7°c, feels like 7°c, humidity at 85%-basically, bring a jacket and a therapist. but that's the thing about this town: it doesn't try to impress you. it just... is.
first stop: a tiny coffee shop i found by accident while trying to escape the rain. the barista had more tattoos than teeth and handed me a latte that tasted like burnt marshmallows and regret. but in a good way? someone told me that place used to be a bank in the '70s and the vault's still in the back. i didn't check, but i like to believe it.
if you get bored, surrey and delta are just a short drive away, but honestly? langley's got enough going on if you know where to look. i spent an afternoon at the fort langley national historic site, which is basically a fancy way of saying "old wooden buildings and a gift shop." but the guy in the blacksmith shop? he was legit. made me a nail in like 30 seconds and told me ghost stories about the place. apparently, there's a lady in white who haunts the storehouse. i didn't see her, but i also didn't stay past 5pm, so.
for food, i hit up *wendy's (yes, the burger joint) because someone drunk at the bar the night before swore it was the best in town. it wasn't. but the sabai thai* down the road? holy crap. go there. just go. i heard the owner used to cook for the thai royal family, and now i'm not sure if that's true, but the green curry made me believe in god.
weather-wise, it's the kind of place where you check the forecast and it's like, "yeah, it's gonna rain. again." but that's part of the charm. everything's green, the air smells like wet earth, and you start to appreciate the little pockets of sunshine like they're rare pokemon.
anyway, here's a map so you don't get lost like i did:
and because i'm legally obligated to include pretty pictures, here:
so yeah. langley. not flashy, not perfect, but it's got soul. and a weirdly good coffee scene. and maybe ghosts. what more do you want?
