Lisbon's Low Tide & Lost Signals: A Postcard from Portugal

@Liam Foster2/12/2026blog

okay, so i woke up to this weird hum. not like a bad one, just…present. then i realized it was the phone. 3651297, 1218148017 - the numbers kept flashing, a digital heartbeat against the backdrop of pastel-colored buildings. feels kinda significant, right? like i'm supposed to decipher a secret message.

*temp: 20.65°C, feels_like: 21.3°C. humidity’s a little clingy, like a damp sweater. i just checked and it's…a soft, hazy warmth. hope you like that kind of thing. it’s the perfect kind of weather for wandering, honestly.

lying here in my ridiculously comfy (read: oversized) Airbnb, trying to unpack and process everything. the city is
alive in a way i haven't experienced in ages. the sound of Fado drifting from a nearby doorway, the clatter of trams, the endless stream of people speaking a language that's both melodic and slightly baffling.

I stumbled across this cafe on Rua das Portas de Santo Antão - it was like a portal to another era. old-world charm, mismatched chairs, and the strongest espresso i’ve had in months. the barista, a woman with the most amazing silver hair, told me something about the history of the building, something about a Portuguese poet who used to write there. now, that’s just cool, right?

I heard that this neighborhood, Alfama, is where you'll find the
real Lisbon. the winding alleyways, the hidden courtyards, the feeling of being utterly lost and completely found all at once. someone told me that if you wander for long enough, you'll stumble upon a tiny, family-run restaurant serving the most incredible seafood. it’s supposed to be a secret, whispered amongst locals.

And the food! oh man, the food. i’ve eaten
pastel de nata until i thought i’d burst. and the fresh grilled sardines… chef's kiss.

Pro-Tip: don't be afraid to get lost. Lisbon is a maze of charming streets, and getting lost is half the fun. just embrace the chaos.

I was chatting with a street artist earlier, and he mentioned that the city is constantly changing. new murals popping up, old buildings being renovated, the rhythm of life shifting with the seasons. it's invigorating!

Overheard Gossip:* someone warned me about the laundry on the rooftops near the Tagus River. Apparently, it’s a sight to behold, but also slightly…unsettling. i’m considering it.

I'm trying to soak up every last bit of this. it’s already proving to be a city that hums with stories. And i have a feeling that 3651297, 1218148017 - whatever they mean - will eventually make sense.

if you get bored, Porto is just a short train ride away. and if you fancy a change of scenery, the Algarve coastline beckons with its sun-drenched beaches.

I’m off to explore a few more hills. wish me luck!
