Lokoja Commute Times: How Long Will You Spend in Traffic?

so here’s the deal with Lokoja-it’s not Lagos, but don’t think you’re gonna breeze through. i’m a freelance photographer, which means i’m always hauling gear, and let me tell you, traffic here has its own rhythm. one minute you’re cruising past the niger river, the next you’re stuck behind a truck that looks like it’s been running since the 80s. average commute? about 45 minutes if you’re lucky, but throw in rain season and you’re looking at closer to an hour or more. and yeah, i’ve missed shoots because of it.

*gear list for surviving Lokoja traffic:*
- water bottle (always)
- portable battery pack (phone dies fast when you’re gps-ing)
- snacks (you’ll thank me later)
- a good playlist (or podcast, if you’re into that)

now, about rent-if you’re thinking of moving here, a decent one-bedroom in the city center will run you about 150,000 to 250,000 naira a month. not cheap, but way more manageable than Abuja. safety-wise, Lokoja is chill during the day, but like any city, don’t wander dark alleys at night with your camera gear out. locals are friendly, but opportunistic.

right now, the weather’s hot and humid-think 30°c and sticky. but the breeze off the river helps. if you need a quick escape, Abuja is just a few hours away by car, and it’s got that big-city buzz Lokoja lacks.

overheard from a local driver: "if you think monday mornings are bad, try friday evenings after payday. everyone’s on the road, and half the danfos are on strike."
