Markham: The City That's More Than Just a Suburb

so i'm sitting here in markham, ontario, and i'm thinking, this place is wild. i mean, it's not toronto, but it's not some sleepy suburb either. it's got this weird energy, like it's trying to be something more. i just checked and it's -7.41°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i'm wearing three layers and still shivering, but hey, that's canada for you.

markham is this melting pot of cultures, and i'm not just saying that because it's the politically correct thing to do. i mean, you walk down the street and you hear a dozen different languages. it's like the un, but with more bubble tea shops. and speaking of bubble tea, i heard from a local that the best place to get it is at this spot called *ten ren's tea. they said it's the real deal, not like those chain places that taste like sugar water.

i decided to check out the markham museum because, well, i'm a history nerd. it's this outdoor museum with old buildings and stuff. i overheard someone say it's like stepping back in time, but i think they were being a bit dramatic. it's more like stepping into a really well-preserved suburb from the 1800s. still, it's worth a visit if you're into that kind of thing.

and let's talk about food. oh man, the food in markham is something else. i went to this place called congee queen because i heard it was the spot for authentic chinese food. and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. the congee was like a warm hug on a cold day. i also tried this dish called peking duck, and it was so good i almost cried. almost.

if you get bored, toronto and richmond hill are just a short drive away. but honestly, i don't know why you'd want to leave markham. it's got everything you need. well, except for maybe a beach. but who needs a beach when you've got toogood pond park? it's this beautiful park with a pond and walking trails. i heard from a local that it's the perfect spot for a picnic, but i think they were just trying to get me to go there so they could have the bubble tea shop to themselves.

i also checked out the flato markham theatre* because i heard they have some pretty cool shows. i didn't catch a show, but i did overhear someone saying that the acoustics are amazing. they said it's like the sound is wrapping around you, which sounds a bit weird, but i guess that's a good thing?

overall, markham is this hidden gem that's just waiting to be discovered. it's got culture, food, history, and a whole lot of personality. so if you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and check it out. just don't forget your coat. it's cold out there.
