mexico city: where the air is thin and the tacos are thick
so i'm in mexico city now, after what felt like a million flights. my legs are tired and my head's kinda spinning from the altitude. it's all happening at once, this city is...
i just checked and it's...19.94°C there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. it doesn't get too crazy hot or cold, which is nice, but it's still pretty high up at 2,240 meters. you'll definitely feel the altitude if you're not used to it. been drinking water like crazy.
so this city is built on this drained lakebed, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. it's kinda weird when you think about it - no river, just a big basin. someone told me that they have to deal with flooding issues, especially during the rainy season from may to october. not ideal, i guess.
if you get bored, ecatepec de morelos, nezahualcóyotl, and naucalpan are just a short drive away. there's also puebla further southeast. i haven't been there yet, but maybe i will when i'm not so tired.
the food here is pretty good, from what i've tried. tacos, mole poblano, tamales - all that stuff. i've been living mostly on street food like tacos al pastor and elotes. someone told me that the guacamole is to die for, but i haven't had any yet. maybe next time. someone also told me that the street food is amazing but be careful with the water. makes sense.
oh, and the air quality isn't great, and the traffic is a nightmare. someone told me that the subway is your best bet for getting around. i've been using mostly uber, which is better than trying to drive here. someone told me that the earthquakes are pretty common too. great.
the city's got a lot of history - built on the site of tenochtitlán, the ancient aztec capital. there's the zócalo, teotihuacán, chapultepec park... lots to see if you're into that sort of thing. i'm pretty tired right now, so i haven't explored much. maybe tomorrow. or the day after. we'll see.
anyway, that's my take on mexico city so far. it's a unique place, for sure. not sure if i'll stay long-term, but it's been an experience. i think i need a nap now.
