Pittsburgh's job market and rent prices are a mess, but the pierogies are worth it

so here's the deal with pittsburgh right now. i moved here last year thinking it'd be cheaper than new york or chicago, and yeah, the rent is lower, but everything else? it's a mixed bag. according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics, the unemployment rate in the pittsburgh metro area was 4.7% as of march 2024, which is actually slightly above the national average of 3.9%. that's not terrible, but it's not exactly booming either. and the median rent for a one-bedroom in the city is around $1,200, which is still a lot if you're trying to live on a freelance photographer's budget.

but here's the thing: pittsburgh's economy is shifting. the old steel industry is gone, but now there's a growing tech scene, healthcare jobs, and even some film production work. i've heard rumors from locals that the robotics industry is hiring like crazy, especially around the strip district. one guy at a coffee shop told me, "if you can code or fix robots, you're golden here."

weather-wise, it's been a weird spring. one day it's 70 and sunny, the next it's raining sideways. but when the sun does come out, the city looks unreal. the rivers, the bridges, the old brick buildings-it's got this gritty charm that i can't get enough of. and the food? don't even get me started. primanti bros. sandwiches are a must, and the pierogies at s&d polish deli are life-changing.

if you're thinking about moving here, here's my drunk advice: don't expect it to be dirt cheap, but do expect it to be real. the people are down-to-earth, the neighborhoods are diverse, and there's always something happening if you know where to look. check out the pittsburgh subreddit for local tips, or yelp for the best dive bars and hidden gems.

and if you're into outdoor stuff, you're in luck. moraine state park is just a short drive away, and it's perfect for hiking or kayaking. or if you're feeling fancy, there's always the andy warhol museum or a show at the benedum center.

anyway, here's the map so you can see where all this chaos is happening:

and because every blog post needs pretty pictures, here are some unsplash images that actually capture the vibe:

if you're still on the fence, just remember: pittsburgh isn't perfect, but it's got soul. and sometimes, that's enough.
