Religious and Cultural Diversity in Dongguan: A Chef’s Messy Take
so iWas hacking away at my knives during a rainstorm last night when my girlfriend texted me about some ‘traditional chinese tea ceremony’ happening at this temple nearby. i didn’t get it at first. tea ceremony? in dongguan? but then i looked at the map on my phone-those stupid coordinates everyone sends you-and realized it was like two blocks from my uhM. yeah. temple market. right. so we went. and it wasn’t just tea. there was this guy in a hanfu selling jianbing with a tibetan prayer scroll tucked into his apron. and next to him? some old man in a dalmatian blazer chanting in yiddish. yiddish? in dongguan? yeah. turns out there’s this synagogue down the street that’s been going since the 90s. my friend yuki who’s a history nerd said it’s a refugee thing. like, jews and chinese intermarried. or something. i didn’t ask.
anyway. the tea guy was obsessed. he kept muttering about ‘harmony of flavors’ while stirring a pot of jasmine leaves in a bronze teapot. i asked him why he was there. he said, ‘to keep the ancestors from judging me.’ i didn’t know if he meant the food or the religion. probably both. anyway. that night, i dreamt about stir-frying noodles with a rabbi. weird. real weird.
but here’s the kicker: dongguan’s not some fake ‘diverse’ place. no. it’s messy. like my sous-vide. the cost of living is half what it is in san fran. i could probably open a food truck here for $2k. min wage is like $600 a month. which is great if you’re a freelance photographer who needs to pay for a drone. or a budget student who needs to pay for noodles. that one, lena, from the hostel by the mangrove park, she’s learning how to make dai gen doufu. i heard through the grapevine she’s gonna open a vegan place called ‘the chabad veg’? or was it ‘temple veg’? i lost track.
i also overheard some random dude at the night market yelling about how the ‘christians are taking over the bible study’ next month. i asked him why. he said, ‘they’re bringing in the choirs from Guangdong. preach to us like we’re tourists.’ he was right, kinda. yesterday i walked past a church and heard them singing ‘oh happy birthday’ in cantonese. it sounded… off. like a diy band. but then again, the neighbor’s kid just started torah school. so maybe it’s not off. maybe it’s just… mixed.
and the weather? it’s this weird thing where it rains for 20 minutes and then the sun bursts through like it’s trying to apologize. last week, i saw a tibetan monk selling incense next to a taiwanese startup marketing ai-powered luck charms. both were handing out flyers. the monk’s said, ‘patience is a virtue.’ the entrepreneur said, ‘no, algo-bodied is a vibe.’ i don’t know.
someone warned me about the temple market after i drunk-texted someone ‘where to find authentic religions?’ turns out, it’s not about authenticity. it’s about survival. this guy in the hanfu? he said he’s niya. a migrant worker from yunnan. but he’s teaching kids tai chi with a prayer in it. something about ‘moving souls through movement.’ i don’t know. it made me hungry. and broke.
so yeah. dongguan’s diversity is like my kitchen. weird ingredients. too many spices. sometimes it burns. but sometimes it tastes like home. or at least like a friend who doesn’t care if you’re judging them.
if you wanna see it in person, check out the temple market on TripAdvisor: link. or take a risk and DM a local on Reddit: link. and if you’re into yiddish diesel, there’s this Yelp thread about the ‘most confusing halal diner in town’: link.
i’d love to hear your thoughts. are you here for the tea, the drama, or the weird?
p.s. the maps app will show you the temple. it’s between the bamboo forest and the illegal skyscraper. take a left, then a right, then pray no one tells you about the dalmatian guy. he’s dangerous.
