Remote Work in Sangereng: Is it a Digital Nomad Paradise? (Probably Not, But Here’s Why)

@Luna Sterling2/8/2026blog

so i just started remote working in sagereng and let me tell you it’s a wild ride. first off, i looked up the rent and it’s like $300 a month for a tiny place, but that’s if you’re not picky. i mean, it’s not like you’re gonna have a balcony or anything. just a tiny room with a window that faces a wall. safety? okay, i guess. the crime rate is low, but don’t go blackout drinking in the alleyways at 3 am or whatever. i heard from a drunk guy at a bar that he got robbed because he was too intoxicated to notice someone slipping a knife into his drink. that’s not exactly a pro-tip.

now, the job market here? it’s a mess. i told someone i’m a street artist and they said there’s a lot of freelance work here, especially if you’re into digital art. but don’t get your hopes up, it’s all through word of mouth. one day, a guy in a sarong just messaged me out of the blue saying, ‘you’re awesome, come do that mural on my shop.’ it was surreal. but then the next day, he said, ‘oh, i already gave the job to someone else.’ classic.

weather here is like a hormonal teenager. one day it’s 35 degrees and sticky as hell, the next it’s raining sideways and you’re begging your laptop to dry faster than your socks. i tried to set up my easel outside last week, but the wind just kept blowing my pants away. neighbors? they’re… loud? there’s this old man who plays mariachi music every morning at 6:30. i don’t know if it’s a warning or a vibe. either way, it’s not helping my focus.

overheard gossip? let me spill some. a local told me remote work is a trap because the city’s too small, you’ll get lonely. another said the visa process is a nightmare if you’re not from europe. and someone else-this one was sober, i think-said the internet is so bad here that you’ll lose your mind trying to upload a 5mb file. i mean, i’ve experienced that. my last project crashed because the Wi-Fi decided to take a nap.

here’s the tea: sagereng isn’t a digital nomad paradise. it’s a chaotic, unpredictable place that would either make or break you. if you’re into randomness, maybe it’s your spot. but if you need stability, stick to somewhere with better Wi-Fi and less mariachi music.

p.s. i found this place onwhere someone called it ‘a gem with a side of madness.’ anotherreview said the coffee isarras but the prices are stolen from your future. and onthere’s a whole thread about how to avoid the ‘sangereng gut.’ i didn’t read it. i’m too busy trying to paint a mural in my porch while it rains.

psst: if you’re thinking of moving here,might have listings. don’t trust them. i did, and now i’m stuck in a room with a parrot and a Wi-Fi router that hates me.
