Studying in Kabinda: Top Universities and Student Life (Don’t Ask Me How I Got Here)

okay, so, like, Kabinda. seriously. it’s… a thing. i stumbled upon it while trying to reroute after a particularly disastrous attempt at finding a decent Ethiopian coffee shop in Nairobi. let me tell you, that was a low point. anyway, i’m here now, mostly because my laptop battery died and the nearest charging station was, apparently, a three-hour drive. which, honestly, felt like a good idea at the time.

right. universities. there aren’t a ton of them, you know? but the University of Kabinda (UoK) is the big one. it’s got a decent science program, which is what i’m clinging to for dear life. they’re also apparently doing some pretty interesting stuff with sustainable agriculture - which, honestly, feels like a good investment considering the… well, you’ll see. the student population is mostly local, with a small but growing number of international students, mostly from DRC and Angola. it’s a real melting pot, which is cool, but also means everyone’s speaking a dozen different languages at once. it’s… stimulating.

Speaking of seeing, the weather’s been… intense. think perpetual twilight mixed with a drizzle that smells vaguely of wet earth and something vaguely floral. it’s called ‘ghost mist’ - apparently, it’s common around here. locals say it’s the spirits of old farmers complaining about the price of maize. i’m not entirely convinced, but it’s a good story. it’s a short drive to the coast, though - about an hour, if you’re lucky and the roads aren’t being held up by… well, you’ll hear.

Let’s talk money. this is where it gets real. I’ve been scraping by on ramen and the occasional questionable street food. here’s a rough breakdown (and this is very rough, based on some frantic googling and a chat with a guy selling mangoes):

ExpenseEstimated Cost (USD)Notes
Rent (Studio)$150 - $300Depends on location, obviously.
Food$100 - $200If you’re not a ramen connoisseur.
Utilities$30 - $60Electricity is surprisingly expensive.
Transportation$20 - $50Mostly walking or shared taxis.
Internet$30 - $50Spotty, to be honest.

*Pro-Tip: Haggle everything. Seriously. It’s expected. And learn a few basic phrases in Lingala - it’ll go a long way.

Okay, okay, let’s get to the gossip. I overheard a conversation at the local market yesterday - something about a professor at UoK who’s been accused of… let’s just say, ‘creative’ research methods. Apparently, he’s been using genetically modified cassava to try and grow bigger pumpkins. it’s… ambitious.

Overheard Gossip #1: "He says it’s for the good of the nation! More pumpkins, more food!" - a woman selling dried fish.

And then there’s the legend of the ‘Silent Watcher’ - a figure said to haunt the old botanical gardens. Apparently, if you stare at him for too long, he’ll steal your memories. I’m not saying it’s true, but I’ve definitely felt a chill in those gardens.

Overheard Gossip #2: “Don’t go near the gardens after dark. Seriously. Just… don’t.” - a teenager with a very serious expression.

I also got some pretty solid advice from a guy who runs a small repair shop. He warned me to avoid the ‘Blue Lagoon’ - a bar on the outskirts of town that’s known for its… potent cocktails and questionable clientele. He said, “It’s beautiful, but it’ll swallow you whole.” Trust me on this one.

Local Warning: “The Blue Lagoon is a trap. A beautiful, shimmering trap.” - a grizzled mechanic.

Seriously, Kabinda is… something. It’s chaotic, it’s weird, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. But there’s a certain charm to it, a raw energy that’s hard to ignore.

Right, gotta go. My battery’s flashing red. Kabinda, you’ve been… an experience. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
