supaul: where the kosi river laughs at your plans
let me tell you about supaul, which i absolutely did not plan to visit until i missed a bus and ended up here. this town in bihar’s mithila region has this vibe of ‘we’ve seen worse’-probably because the kosi river floods everything every other tuesday. i just checked and it's 18°C with a ‘feels like’ of 17°C right now, hope you like that kind of thing. honestly, the weather’s the least dramatic part of this place.
the river’s kind of the boss here. they call it the ‘sorrow of bihar,’ but honestly, it’s more like that one chaotic friend who ruins parties but you keep inviting them anyway. the kosi barrage? someone told me it’s ‘picture-perfect if you ignore the existential threat of water.’ sounds about right.
the vishnu mandir here looks like it got lost on its way to south india. a whole temple with intricate carvings just… there. like someone forgot to tell bihar it’s supposed to stick to one architectural style. someone also told me the litti-chokha is better ‘in the next town over,’ but i ate it here anyway. no regrets.
if you get bored, sahasra, madhepura, araria, and madhubani are just a short drive away. or you can stare at nepal from here and wonder if their wifi’s better. the locals? they’re mostly farming rice and patience, judging by how chill they are about the whole ‘river might eat my house’ situation.
also, pro tip: don’t visit during monsoon unless you’re into impromptu swimming. the buses to patna are weirdly reliable though, which is either a miracle or a lie.
