The Art of Capturing Winter Morning Shadows / Paris Through a Lens

rain kept teasing me all morning but the light was too good to pass up. i woke at 5:30, coffee numb in my hands, camera bag tighter against my chest like a shield. the frees was 16.33° but it felt like 15.12 and i was already shivering through three layers. lens fogged up within seconds but that never stopped me-these shots were eating at me anyway.

walked straight to the Seine, past croissants still warm in plastic cups, still feeding ducks on their final stage of migration. the river was glassy, all reflections of streetlights and frozen breath. someone told me that the graffiti crew near the Pont Neuf hates tourists taking red filter selfies but they’re wrong, this is where the magic happens.

i snapped the first dozen pics then staggered toward the Musée de l’Orangerie. camera strap snagged my scarf mid-stride, which was perfect because the gusts from the Champs-Élysée tunnels were brutal. tried to catch that golden hour haze but the clouds were holding onto winter like a spiteful ex. overheard a local in café du Nord muttering, ‘if you think this is peaceful, wait till you hit the markets at 10’.

neighbors aren’t a problem here-they’re basically the city’s ghosts. but if you get bored, Versailles is just a short drive away and they’ll let you shoot the palace gardens for free if you promise not to use a drone.

pro move: borrow a vintage Rolleiflex from a friendly antique shop. pays better than you think.

check the weather, obviously-those chilly rays are no joke.

parisian winter essentials checklist - credit to a guy i met at the metro who looked like he’d murdered his last umbrella.

trip advisor review of café du Nord - read the comments about the ’mysterious mocha’ that tastes like regret.

local market gossip on Yelp - one user called it ‘the reason I came alive.’

and remember: when in doubt, chase the fog.
