the safest (and most dangerous) neighborhoods in herāt

@Tobias King2/8/2026blog

so here's the deal. herāt isn't exactly a city you find in every travel blog. it's dusty, ancient, and full of contradictions. some parts feel like they're stuck in time, others like they're holding their breath. if you're planning to visit or move here, you need to know where it's chill and where it's... less chill.

first off, the weather right now? imagine walking through an oven that occasionally spits sand in your face. summer here is no joke. but hey, kandahar and mashhad are just a short drive or flight away if you need a change of scenery.

the safest spots

*gulran district - this area is surprisingly calm. locals say it's because everyone knows everyone. crime is low, and the streets are lined with small shops selling everything from spices to secondhand clothes. it's not glamorous, but it's safe.

enjil district - another quiet spot. it's more rural, so don't expect nightlife. but if you're into farming or just want peace, this is your place. rent here is dirt cheap, like $50 a month for a small house.

the dangerous areas

pashtun zarghun - word on the street is this place has seen its fair share of trouble. not somewhere you wanna wander alone at night. locals warned me about it, and i believe them.

shindand district* - sketchy vibes. there's a military presence here, which makes some folks feel safe, but others say it's a magnet for trouble. i'd steer clear unless you have a solid reason to go.

overheard gossip

"herāt's old city? beautiful, but don't go after dark. my cousin's friend got mugged near the friday mosque." - random guy at a tea stall.

"if you're a foreigner, stick to the main roads. the back alleys? not worth the risk." - taxi driver who wouldn't take me there.

cost of living (because why not)

ExpenseCost (USD)
Rent (1-bedroom)$100-$200
Meal at local restaurant$2-$5
Taxi ride (short)$1-$2

pro tips for staying safe

- always travel with a local if possible.
- avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
- keep your valuables hidden. pickpocketing happens, even in "safe" neighborhoods.

final thoughts

herāt is a city of extremes. it's beautiful and brutal, welcoming and wary. if you're careful, respectful, and know where to go (and where not to), you'll be fine. just don't expect it to be like any other city you've visited.
