tokyo's urban sprawl and my sleep-deprived ramblings
i'm sitting here, sipping on a coffee, trying to make sense of the last few days in tokyo. the weather's been pretty *humid, i just checked and it's a sticky 22.54 degrees celsius out there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the pressure is pretty high too, but hey, that's just part of the fun, right? i mean, who needs a relaxing vacation when you can have a sweaty adventure in one of the world's most intense cities.
my neighbors in the hostel have been a mixed bag - there's the friendly aussie guy who's always up for a chat, and then there's the quiet couple from france who seem to be on a mission to explore every hidden gem in the city. if you get bored, osaka and yokohama are just a short train ride away, and i heard that the food in osaka is insane. someone told me that the best tonkatsu in tokyo is at this tiny restaurant in shimokitazawa, so i'm definitely going to check that out.
i've also been hearing rumors about a secret bar in shinjuku that's only accessible through a nondescript door in a back alley. i'm not sure if it's true, but i'm definitely going to try and find it. you can find more info about tokyo's nightlife on tripadvisor or yelp.
as for safety, i've heard that tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world, but you should still be careful, especially at night. someone warned me about the crowded streets in shibuya, so i'm going to try and avoid those areas during rush hour. you can find more info about tokyo's safety on the japan guide website.
overall, tokyo's been a wild ride, and i'm excited to see what the next few days bring. if you're thinking of visiting, i'd say go for it - just be prepared for the chaos*. check out lonely planet for more tips and recommendations.
