Cairo Through a Lens: Haze and Humidity Edition
just landed in cairo and the air’s thick enough to chew on. my camera lenses are fogging up faster than my brain after three espressos. *giza is practically breathing down my neck - that pyramid is impossible to ignore when it’s literally looming outside my hostel window. the locals here give off serious “seen it all” vibes, which honestly makes them perfect subjects.
i just checked the weather app and it’s hovering around that damp chill at 11.28°C - feels like 10.81°C if you’re into that kind of damp sweater weather. humidity’s at 90%, so every photo comes out looking like it’s been shot through a foggy shower door. pressure’s holding steady at 1018 though, so at least the sky’s not collapsing on my head. if you get bored with the dust and chaos, alexandria’s just a short drive away for a quick sea fix.
someone at a coffee shop swore the egyptian museum is haunted by mummy ghosts who rearrange exhibits at night. drunk advice from a guy named karim suggested i skip the camel rides unless i want a “personal desert exfoliation treatment.” heard whispers that khan el-khalili bazaar will scam tourists blind, but honestly, the pickpocketing is half the adventure.
pro tip: wrap your gear in plastic bags. the humidity is no joke, and sand gets everywhere - even inside your lens if you sneeze wrong. i met this photographer who shot a wedding at the pyramids and groom’s beard turned orange by sunset. wild.
“that felucca ride? skip it unless you want to reenact the titanic with fewer icebergs and more floating garbage.”
“abu simbel’s worth the 3AM bus ride. bonus: fewer tourists means more room to nap on the statues.”
“try zamalek* at dawn. all the instagrammers are still asleep, and the light’s insane.”
for real tho, check out tripadvisor’s cairo hidden gems if you’re tired of pyramids. yelp’s got some decent kushari spots too - carbs are basically survival gear here. and if you’re into history rabbit holes, lonely planet’s cairo guide has way more gossip than i could ever make up.
humidity’s slowly pickling my brain, but the city’s got this chaotic energy that’s kinda addictive. next stop: pretending i’m an archaeologist at saqqara. wish me luck not getting lost in the catacombs… again.
