Durango Diaries: Chasing Trains, Tacos, and That Weird Mountain Light
so i just got back from durango, and let me tell you-this place is a whole mood. the weather was doing its thing, temp hanging around 16.71°C but feeling like 15.79°C, which basically means you need a light jacket and a lot of patience for the sun to decide if it wants to show up. humidity was 52%, which for me is the sweet spot-not too sticky, not too desert-dry. i checked the forecast like three times a day, mostly because i kept forgetting if i needed my hoodie or not. if you get bored, silverton and cortez are just a short drive away, and rumor has it the views on the way are chef's kiss. someone told me that the best time to catch the light on the mountains is right after a quick rain, when everything looks like it's been Photoshopped by a pro. i heard that from a barista who looked like she knew her stuff, so i'm inclined to believe her. also, if you're into trains (i'm not, but i pretended), the durango & silverton narrow gauge railroad is apparently a big deal. i almost bought a ticket just to say i did, but then i remembered i get motion sick on swings. the city itself? walkable, quirky, and full of people who look like they just stepped out of a flannel catalog. i kept seeing the same group of locals at different cafes, which either means durango is tiny or i have terrible timing. probably both. anyway, here's a map so you don't get lost like i did that one time i tried to find the "hidden" taco stand and ended up at a dog park.
and because i know you're here for the vibes, here are some pics that don't even do it justice.
if you're planning a trip, just know that durango doesn't really do "rushing." it's the kind of place where you order coffee and the barista asks you about your life story. and honestly? i kind of loved it. for more on what to do, check out tripadvisor's durango guide or just wander until you find a bakery that smells like heaven. you won't regret it.
