Dust & Echoes in Roswell, New Mexico – Seriously
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 4004886… that’s the number of times i’ve said ‘like’ in the last 48 hours. and 1484364591? don’t even ask. it just… appeared. i’m starting to think this trip is messing with my brain. i landed in Roswell yesterday, and honestly, it’s… weird. not in a bad way, just… intensely there.
It’s like stepping into a slightly faded sci-fi movie. The air is thick, like you could chew it, and the humidity is clinging to everything - 100% and a pressure of 1019. Feels like 1.55, which is basically a solid 55 degrees outside. The temp min was 3.85, the max was 5.49. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. It’s not hot, not exactly, but it’s a presence. Like the desert is holding its breath.
I’m staying at this motel called ‘The Comet’ - it’s got a serious 70s vibe, all avocado green and shag carpet. Someone told me that the owner, Earl, used to be a UFO investigator. I didn’t ask for details. I just paid and took the key. It’s…rustic. Let’s go with rustic.
I spent the afternoon wandering around the International UFO Museum and Research Center. It’s… a lot. Lots of grainy photos, blinking lights, and conspiracy theories. I overheard a group of college kids arguing about whether the Roswell incident was actually a weather balloon. Honestly, who knows? I’m leaning towards ‘elaborate government cover-up,’ but i’m not ruling anything out. I found a little diner called ‘The Stardust Grill’ - Yelp says it’s got the best burgers in town. I ordered a double cheeseburger with extra pickles. It was… fine. Definitely fine.
I also checked out the UFO Festival grounds. It’s next week, and there’s already a bunch of vendors selling alien-themed merchandise. T-shirts, glow-in-the-dark alien figurines, the works. I bought a little plastic alien that’s currently judging me from my dashboard. It’s a good vibe.
Speaking of vibes, the neighbors are… interesting. If you get bored, Las Cruces is just a short drive away. There’s this old guy, Silas, who lives across the street. He’s always tinkering with something - usually old radios or motorcycles. He keeps a flock of pigeons, and they seem to follow me everywhere. I heard that he claims to have seen a UFO himself back in ‘67. Probably just a reflection, but hey, you never know. There’s also a family down the block, the Millers, who are obsessed with alien abduction stories. They have a whole wall of newspaper clippings dedicated to the topic. It’s… a lot.
I’m trying to capture the feeling of this place in some photos. It’s hard to describe. It’s like a dream, or a half-remembered memory. I’m thinking of doing a series of black and white shots, focusing on the textures and the shadows. I need to find a good spot to shoot at sunset. Maybe the old missile silo outside of town? I’ll check TripAdvisor for some recommendations.
I’m also trying to avoid the tourist traps. I found this little art gallery tucked away on a side street - it’s run by a local artist named Maria. She’s creating these incredible sculptures out of recycled metal. I bought a small piece - a little alien head. It’s…perfect. I’m going to try and find some more hidden gems. I’m not really into the big attractions. I just want to soak up the atmosphere.
Seriously, this place is a trip. I’m going to grab another coffee and see what else I can find. Don’t expect a polished, perfectly-structured blog post. This is just…life. Messy, chaotic, and slightly unsettling. Check out this map:
And if you're looking for more info, this is a good starting point: https://www.roswellmuseum.org/ And for the best burgers, apparently: https://thestardustgrill.com/ And to see what other locals are saying: https://www.yelp.com/
Okay, gotta go. The plastic alien is staring at me again.
