edmonton vs. ottawa: which one offers a better life? my completely biased opinion
so i've been living in edmonton for a few months now, and i have to say, it's been a wild ride. my friend back in ottawa told me to 'be prepared for the impending doom' when it comes to rent prices here, and at first, i was skeptical. i mean, ottawa is like the economy, right? but after seeing some actual numbers, i'm starting to think she might've been right.
According to tripadvisor, the average rent in ottawa is around $1,800/month for a one-bedroom apartment. in edmonton, it's more like $1,200/month. now, i know what you're thinking: 'that's a huge difference!' and you're right, it is. but it's not all about the benjamins, folks. here are some other facts to consider when deciding which city offers a better life:
yelp says the job market in ottawa is pretty strong, with lots of tech and startup companies hiring. edmonton, on the other hand, is more focused on the energy industry, which is a bit more... unstable.
anyway, after doing some research, i decided to take a road trip to ottawa to see if it's really as bad as my friend said it would be.
when i got there, i was greeted by this lovely rain. i mean, who needs sunshine when you can have grey skies, right?
so, how did i end up feeling about ottawa? well, let's just say it's not my cup of tea. the city feels really spread out, and the people seem a bit... cold. i mean, i've lived in edmonton for a while now, and i know how friendly people can be, but ottawa just didn't have that same vibe.
according to reddit, the best way to get around ottawa is by bike, but i'm not exactly the cycling type. plus, it's not like i can just walk around ottawa anytime i want. it's all like, 'sorry, tourist, you can't walk here, this is a residential area'. no thanks.
in edmonton, on the other hand, i can walk wherever i want, whenever i want. and the best part? it's only a short drive from my place to the river valley.
so, in the end, it's really up to you whether ottawa or edmonton is the better city. but for me, it's easy: edmonton all the way.
if you're thinking of moving to edmonton, just make sure to pack your rain boots. and your sense of humor.
