Healthcare Quality in Peshawar: Top Hospitals & Medical Centers (A Freelance Photographer's Perspective)

look, peeshawar’s got its own vibe, ya know? kinda chaotic, but there’s a warmth to it. the air’s thick with dust and the smell of chai - a weird mix, but you get used to it. the weather lately? a scorching haze. feels like someone cranked up the oven, but with a persistent wind that kicks up all the dust. reminds me of those old black and white photos of the city, all grainy and… well, dusty.

so, healthcare in Peshawar. it’s… complicated. i’ve been snapping around here for a few weeks, documenting the sights, and inevitably, you start thinking about the practical stuff. like, what happens if you need a doctor? i did some digging, not the super scientific kind, more like asking around at the local coffee shops (which, by the way, are surprisingly good). i’m no medical expert, just a photographer trying to navigate a new city and hoping to live long enough to capture it all.

basically, you’ve got a range of options. there are the big, established hospitals - the ones you hear about. then there are the smaller clinics, and of course, the private practitioners. i tried to get a sense of what people actually say about them, not just what’s on the glossy brochures.

*Hayat Hospital: this one keeps popping up. everyone mentions the cardiology department. someone told me (overheard gossip, so take it with a grain of salt) that the waiting times can be brutal, but the doctors are supposedly skilled. i saw a flyer mentioning a new cardiac catheterization lab - good news, right?

Shams Clinic: a lot of people recommend this for general checkups and minor ailments. apparently, it's a bit more affordable than Hayat, which is a plus if you're trying to keep your budget in check. i'm a budget student, so every penny counts. TripAdvisor reviews are… mixed. lots of praise, but also some complaints about communication.

Kosar Medical Center: focused on specialized treatments. i heard a rumour (definitely overheard gossip this time, from a guy selling chai near the market) that their ortho department is top-notch. he said his cousin had knee surgery there and was back on his feet in no time. i’m not qualified to verify, obviously.

Now, the cost thing. rent in Peshawar can be surprisingly reasonable - you can find a decent room for around PKR 15,000-25,000 a month, depending on the area. food is cheap if you eat local - think kebabs, nihari, and all the delicious street food. but healthcare? that's a different story. a basic doctor's visit might cost you PKR 500-1000, but specialized treatments can be
much pricier. A local told me to always haggle - it’s just the way things are done here.

Safety: look, i'm not gonna sugarcoat it. safety is a concern. i’ve been keeping to the more populated areas and trying not to wander around alone at night. The local police seem visible, but it’s always good to be aware of your surroundings. r/Peshawar is a good place to get real-time updates and ask questions.

Job Market*: the job market is… developing. mostly focused on textiles, agriculture, and some emerging tech start-ups. salaries can be low compared to other cities in Pakistan, but the cost of living helps a little.

So, there you have it - a slightly rambling, definitely not exhaustive overview of healthcare in Peshawar. i'm no expert, just a photographer trying to make sense of things. it’s a city full of contradictions - beautiful and gritty, chaotic and kind. and just a short flight away, you can be in Islamabad, a completely different vibe altogether.

if you're planning a trip, or just curious about what life's like here, don't hesitate to ask. and hey, if you happen to know a good doctor, please send them my way. just kidding… mostly. you can find more information on local medical directories on Yelp. Also, check out this Facebook group for local recommendations.
