Is Delhi a Good Place to Live? 2026 Honest Review (Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You)

okay, so like, i’m pretty sure i haven’t slept properly in 72 hours. fueled by chai and the sheer, overwhelming stuff of delhi, i’m trying to answer the big question: is this place actually worth the hassle? i’ve been here for six months, bouncing between Paharganj and a surprisingly chill corner of Hauz Khas Village, and honestly? it’s a goddamn rollercoaster.

seriously, the weather’s been… intense. think monsoon-adjacent, but with a persistent layer of dust that feels like you’re perpetually wearing a slightly gritty scarf. it’s like someone cranked up the humidity and then threw a handful of red dirt into the mix. it’s not bad, it’s just… present. you can practically smell the rain coming, which is both a blessing and a curse. it’s a short flight away to Jaipur, which is basically a giant, slightly less chaotic version of this place, if that helps. and then there’s Agra, obviously, with the Taj - you gotta see it, even if it’s swarming with tourists.

Let’s talk numbers, because i’m a sucker for spreadsheets, and my brain’s currently operating on approximately 60% caffeine. According to Numbeo, as of today (which, let’s be real, is probably wrong), renting a one-bedroom apartment in a decent area - like Karol Bagh - will set you back around $300-$600 a month. Food? You can eat like a king for $10 a day if you’re not fussy. Job market? It’s… patchy. I’m freelancing as a graphic designer, and it’s been okay, but you need to network hard. Reddit’s r/delhi is your friend - seriously, lurk there. https://www.reddit.com/r/delhi/

Okay, so, i overheard some seriously spicy gossip at a chai stall in Connaught Place last night. Apparently, the cops in South Delhi are
really cracking down on street vendors - like, aggressively. Someone said, and i quote, “Don’t even think about setting up shop near the embassies. You’ll be gone before you can say ‘masala chai.’” It’s a vibe, you know?

Overheard Gossip #1: “My cousin tried to get a driver’s license. Took him six months, filled out seventeen forms, and still got a warning for having a slightly crooked signature. Seriously, the bureaucracy is a monster.”

Then there’s the traffic. Don’t even get me started. It’s like a slow-motion, honking, horn-blasting ballet of frustration. I’ve learned to embrace the chaos. I’ve even started timing my commutes - it’s surprisingly therapeutic.

Overheard Gossip #2: “Heard the new metro line to Gurgaon is finally opening. Supposed to be a game-changer, but everyone’s saying it’ll just be packed like sardines.”

Safety Concerns (From a Slightly Paranoid Perspective): Delhi’s generally safe, but you gotta be smart. Stick to well-lit areas at night, don’t flash cash, and be aware of your surroundings. I’ve been reading up on common scams - tourist traps are everywhere. TripAdvisor has some decent tips: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Destinations/India/Delhi

I’m also a huge fan of the street art scene. It’s popping up everywhere, adding a splash of color and a bit of rebellious energy to the city. Check out the murals in Hauz Khas Village - they’re insane. And if you’re into vintage clothes, you’re in luck. There are tons of amazing shops in Khan Market and Janpath.

Pro-Tip: Download the Delhi Metro app. Seriously. It’s a lifesaver. And learn a few basic Hindi phrases - it goes a long way.

Final Verdict (Drunk Advice): Delhi is a mess. It’s loud, it’s chaotic, it’s overwhelming. But it’s also incredibly vibrant, full of incredible food, fascinating history, and genuinely kind people. If you’re looking for a perfectly polished, Instagram-filtered experience, this isn’t it. But if you’re up for an adventure, a challenge, and a serious dose of sensory overload, then yeah, you might just fall in love with this crazy, beautiful city. Just… bring earplugs. And maybe a hazmat suit for the dust.
