Sweat, WiFi, and Steel: My Chaotic Hunt for the Best Gyms & Yoga Spots in Pohang as a Digital Nomad

look, i didn’t come to Pohang for its jaw-dropping hand statue or the *eomuk (fish cake) street stalls-okay, maybe a little-but when your job involves staring at spreadsheets from a cafe that smells like burnt espresso, you gotta find places to either gainz or zen.

hand statue in seashore

the steel jungle: bodyline gym
tucked behind Jukdo Market where ajummas haggle over squid prices, this place redefines
rustic chic. think: cracked mirrors, k-pop blasting, and enough free weights to make a marine cry. monthly membership? 70,000 won. wifi? nonexistent. street cred? extreme. overheard from a guy bench-pressing what looked like a small car: "if you can PR here, you can PR anywhere-even in Seoul’s fanciesssst gyms."

brown and white concrete building on sea shore during daytime

salt air & savasana: ocean breathe studio
a 10-minute scooter ride from the POSCO steel mill (yes, really), this glass-walled studio lets you downward dog while watching fishing boats bob. single class: 25,000 won. the view? priceless. but check r/PohangLocals before booking-some said the 6am sunrise sessions fill up faster than a BTS concert.

hot goss & real talk
-
"that CrossFit box near the port? great for burpees, but wear nose plugs-the seaweed drying nearby smells like regret." - drunk ajusshi at pohang night market
- rent for a studio apartment here averages 300,000 won/month. compared to Busan (a 1.5hr drive south), it’s a steal.
- current weather: humid sea winds slapping your face like a wet towel, temps hovering at 28°C. perfect for post-workout
hobak-juk* (pumpkin porridge) at Yacho Sikdang.

tldr: pohangs’ fitness scene is less instagrammable latte art, more ‘survive the steel mill vibes and emerge stronger.’ now excuse me while i attempt tree pose during a Zoom call.
