sweet chaos in cozumel: sunburns and taco trucks and bad weather decisions

@Grace Miller2/7/2026blog

just landed in cozumel, my backpack heavier with each step. the 15.54°c air (seriously, who packs a sweater here?) smells like salt and burnt sun-drenched sugar. maybe it’s just me, but i swear the ocean here has a personality. maybe it’s the sunburn i’m imagining.

i checked the weather app and it’s 15.54°c, feels like 15.11, 75% humidity clinging like a hyperactive octopus. someone told me to pack ‘layers‘-turns out, that’s a codeword for ‘everything will be damp.’ pro move: rent a snorkel from the guy with two mismatched flippers near the pier. his face looks like he’s frowning at everything, but he probably has the best deals.

the café down the street? i heard it’s been open since before i’d heard of cozumel’s spiritual tourism boom. the guy there told me the ‘breakfast special’ is black coffee and regret. i’m starting to think water is overrated.

walking past those canna misses every time i step outside. the maps app says cancun’s an hour flight away, but the locals all say ‘drive to belize? not if you’re allergic to bad decisions.’ check out the reviews on tripadvisor for authentic chaos-click here yelp.com/cozumel-cafe.
